Reno Jazz Orchestra Presents 'Creative Directions' Concert at Nevada Museum of Art

Event Description: 

The Reno Jazz Orchestra will present its “Creative Directions” concert on October 21, 2023, at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, Nevada.  

Theperformance starts at 7:30 p.m. and will showcase original compositions by contemporary composers, including current and former members of the Reno Jazz Orchestra. , Band Partners and Band Fans support the Reno Jazz Orchestra.       

The event is also a celebration of the Orchestra’s sixth and newest CD, “NEXT-New Directions,” which can be previewed on Apple Music.

“The seventeen-piece orchestra performance is a musical journey exploring new and innovative directions in jazz music,” said Gary Mayne, Guest Music Director.

The first set includes Ineluctable Modality by Larry Engstrom, Osmosis by Hans Halt,

Vieille Chanson Nouvelle by Chuck Reider and Hansepts by Hans Halt.  The second set will feature This is for Albert by David Caffey, Sketching Restraint by Tyler Gilmore, For the Birds by Hans Halt, Celebration of the Butterflies by Socrates Garcia and will conclude with A Seaworthy Native by Ben Wendel (arr. Knowles).

The Reno Jazz Orchestra is a 17-piece contemporary big band in Northern Nevada. The band was formed in 1997 by musicians who performed with acts such as Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Natalie Cole in the casino showroom orchestras. Currently, the band is comprised of highly skilled veteran musicians as well as graduates from the University of Nevada, Reno’s jazz program. The Orchestra has recently featured such guest artists as Tom Scott, Kurt Elling, Patti Austin, Ernie Watts, and Dianne Schuur.
