In downtown Reno, the Virginia Street Bridge crosses over the Truckee River. Back in the city's heyday as the Divorce Capital of the World, it is said that women would throw their wedding rings into the river when they were finally free from their marital ties, a ritual portrayed in the 1961 movie, "The Misfits," with Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable. The original bridge lasted from 1905 to 2015, when signs of extreme wear and deterioration required its replacement after more than a century of use. The new bridge opened in April of 2016 to great fanfare.
