Started in 1993 when owner Tom Young helped to get legislation passed that allowed beer production in Nevada, Great Basin's beer is so popular that many of the beers are sold in liquor stores and supermarkets in the Reno-Carson-Tahoe area and are often rated number one in the microbrewery category in local polls. The three breweries in Reno, Sparks and Carson City are also restaurants where you can see the equipment through several large windows. Each location has 10 to 14 beers on tap daily, with special additions seasonally and during festivals and holidays. If you’re not sure about which brew to choose, try a small sample before deciding. The award-winning beers can also be bought in bottles, cans, growlers or kegs to enjoy at home. The food menu includes beer-compatible starters (many made with the beer), soups, salads, burgers, pub favorites, sandwiches and sausages. A specialty is the house-made beer bread, made with the brewery's wildly popular Ichtyosaur IPA; it's available for sale daily. All three locations offer outdoor seating areas. Go home with beer, logo wear or special glasses from which to drink your next Great Basin.
