Reno Resolutions 2018

By Bryan Akerley | Wednesday, January 3, 2018

I don’t know about you, but this time a year ago I made some resolutions and decided I would be fully committed all 12 months.

Well, that didn’t happen. But guess what? It’s 2018, a new year, and everyone’s ready to give their resolutions another go. And for everyone starting fresh in the new year, there might not be a better place than Reno.

See, in just the past year or two, so many new opportunities for self improvement have opened up in Northern Nevada – and the ones that have been around awhile are now better than ever. So make 2018 the year you stick to your new year resolutions, due in no small part to the following excellent Reno businesses.

The most common resolutions year after year are about eating well, losing weight and becoming a healthier person overall. Of course you can find great recipes online and sign up for a membership at the gym, but keeping this resolution can be fun, delicious and convenient as well!

For those days you just don’t have time or energy to whip up an ultra-healthy breakfast, there’s the newest, hippest spot in Midtown Reno’s Sticks development: Basik Acai cafe. The Hawaiian themed cafe makes some incredible smoothies and acai bowls packed with a punch with the natural power of acai, fruits, vegetables, nuts and other superfoods. Not only do they taste amazing, they’ll give you healthy energy throughout the day.

Go to Great Full Gardens, the popular Midtown (and South Reno) stop, for all natural, organic and local foods. From kale salads and paleo bowls to vegan sandwiches and soups, Great Full Gardens can match any diet with a delicious, flavorful and healthy plate.

As for exercise, Reno has no shortage of awesome gyms to suit your everyday workout needs. But perhaps you’re looking for something a bit, well, different? You’ve surely driven by the Whitney Peak Hotel in Downtown Reno, marveling at the massive outdoor climbing wall up the side of the building. Why not try it for yourself? Or, better yet, start smaller at Whitney Peak’s BaseCamp climbing gym. The place is full of rock walls suited to every skill set, and a membership even includes access to an exclusive gym. With the help of training and many different classes, you can master the art of climbing in 2018 and shed a few pounds while you’re at it.

Maybe this year is all about picking up a new hobby. I know I’m trying to cook more, so why not learn from some of the best in the area? Nothing To It Culinary Center offers classes that range from beginning kitchen courses to Techniquest and even cooking for health (if your trying to kill a couple of birds with one stone). There are courses devoted to specific cuisines and some aimed exclusively at teens and kids. If you want to learn how to cook well and fast, here’s the place to go. Check Nothing To It’s calendar for upcoming classes.

Of course there’s always a type of mental self improvement. Make 2018 the year you read more and learn the most you can. A good place to start is Sundance Bookstore in Midtown. The locally owned shop has two full stories of fiction, nonfiction, self improvement, how-to guides and everything in between. Challenge yourself to read through the entire work of a certain author, learn a new language or study up on other cultures and ideas. Sundance will get you there.

It’s a new year, the possibilities are endless. My advice is to find what makes you the happiest and stick with it, while still looking for new challenges and ways to make that thing even better.

Be sure to explore Northern Nevada and take advantage of what it has to offer this year. For the events happening in Reno this weekend, visit our Daytime, Nightlife and Community events pages.
