The Great Reno Cannabis Crawl

By Bryan Akerley | Wednesday, January 10, 2018

Marijuana, cannabis, weed. Six months ago Nevada was one of the newest states to legalize the recreational use of cannabis, with medical dispensaries pivoting to become one-stop shops for multiple types of marijuana available to those 21 and older.

For weeks, even months, the lines were out the door at each of Reno’s big dispensaries. Now other states, including California, have passed the same legislation, and the lines have died down a bit. The novelty is beginning to fade just a bit. For someone in Reno, there’s no better time to check into the scene.

With strain names like Purple Urkle, Grape Ape and Bubba Kush, it’s understandable if you’re a little intimidated by all the options and the sheer magnitude of the industry. Luckily Reno’s scene fully embraces the newcomer. Check out the following locations as you navigate the high life. Welcome to the world of Reno weed.

Our first stop is The Dispensary. It’s a simple, straightforward name with a ton to offer. The Plumb Lane spot has a wraparound counter with so many options (and samples, so you can take a look up close). The specialists have all the information; just say what kind of feeling you’re after, and they’ll hook you up with the perfect match. Want some pain relief? Try Banana Split. Lower stress? You want Cookies. And, yes, the deals are sweet.

Not far away in Midtown is the massive Blüm dispensary. The giant gray building looms over the area, and it’s all business inside. A super-friendly staff member will guide you through the process, making it completely painless for first-timers. Buy your marijuana in bulk or opt for a pre-roll or a sample amount. There are also different types of THC concentrates for purchase, depending on your preferences.

Just east of downtown Reno is MYNT. MYNT has dozens of strains, plenty of different types of pre-rolled marijuana for instant satisfaction, single-use vape pens and edibles in the form of chocolate, gummy candy and more. The best part? MYNT has an attached patio for immediate, legal enjoyment outside in downtown Reno. Though you may want to wait for the weather to warm up a bit – rain check for, let’s say, mid-April?

Last, we have Sierra Wellness Connection. Sierra Wellness has long been Northern Nevada’s preferred medical marijuana dispensary and is now upping its game with recreational weed. Reno’s clean, clinical location is like a lab full of different strains, full of pre-rolls infused with flavors like grape and mint, sour gummies, chocolate and even dried fruit. There are options for even the pickiest of pot connoisseurs, and it makes for a great place to try it for the first time. As of January 1 the Carson City location of Sierra Wellness has begun recreational sales as well.

Perhaps you’ve been on the fence about this whole recreational weed thing. Maybe you just didn’t want to wait for an hour-plus in one of those lines. Maybe you vowed to try something completely new, to surprise yourself here in 2018, and this might be just the thing. This year, Reno’s still on the road to redefining itself, embracing its cool, eclectic personality that’s finally bubbling over. Perhaps it’s finally time to explore it.
